Head and Neck Cancer

Jun 2 • 1 minute read

As oral healthcare providers, dentists are at the forefront for screening for mouth and throat cancers. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignancy in the oropharynx and oral cavity. The 5 year survival rate for those with localized disease at diagnosis is 83% and 38% in those whose cancer has metastasized.

The most common risk factors are:

  • Alcohol consumption

  • Tobacco use

  • UV exposure

  • Betel quid chewing

  • HPV

Two oral lesions that could be precursors to cancer are white patches (leukoplakia) and red patches (red patches) and should be evaluated again if they do not resolve in 2 weeks.
